The Government of Ontario and the City of Toronto released a joint staff report on November 14, 2005, that proposes a bold, new approach for empowering Canada's largest city.
The final report of the Joint Ontario-City of Toronto Task Force to Review the City of Toronto Acts and Other Legislation outlines the consensus that staff from both of levels of government reached on the proposed elements of new legislation.
The Ontario government will now review the report and will introduce a new City of Toronto Act in the Legislature by the end of 2005.
Toronto City Council is reviewing its governance system in anticipation of broader powers under a proposed new City of Toronto Act. Assisting the City is a three-member, Council-appointed, volunteer Advisory Panel composed of Centennial College President Ann Buller (Chair), UofT Law Professor Sujit Choudhry and Toronto business leader and philanthropist Martin Connell.
