Did You Know . . .

Trees need our protection…

maintain a layer of mulch around your trees to protect them from lawnmower damage

keep paving or interlocking brick at least 3metres away from the base of your trees so they can absorb nutrients and water

tying, nailing or attaching anything to your tree can cause serious damage – it may constrict the flow of water and nutrients through the tree, or can create entry wounds for pests and disease

 Native plants…

require less water, pruning, fertilizing, weeding and maintenance as they are adapted to our local conditions

native trees and shrubs are crucial to the survival of songbirds and butterflies

All trees need regular watering. . .

newly planted trees should be watered twice per week for the first 2 years after planting. Place a hose at the base of the tree on a slow trickle for approximately 20 minutes twice per week. Regular watering greatly increases the survival and growth rates of newly planted trees

mature trees need water too! Place a hose at the base of your trees on a very slow trickle for approximately 40 minutes once per week. Maintaining this watering schedule all summer will improve the vigour of your trees and help them resist pest and disease infestations
